After a trip in a Tesla Model 3 Standard Plus

Traveling just over 300 km in a Tesla Model 3 is nothing out of the ordinary. However, this episode allows us to assess the operation of the car and to assess its consumption. These were some of the objectives pursued by Sabine Prévost when using this vehicle as part of a business trip for her company La Voiture Electrique.

Travel conditions

Completed on Wednesday December 8 aboard a 2021 Tesla Model 3 Standard Plus electric sedan, the loop from Plérin via Guingamp, Carhaix, Quimper, Daoulas, Landerneau and back to the starting point had a total of 324 kilometers.

The weather was more or less calm that day in Brittany. Little wind, but heavy occasional showers, and, above all, a temperature between 3 and 10° C.

Conditions that required the use of different equipment, not always as easily exploitable as on the other models of electric cars commonly used by Sabine Prévost.

Heating and wipers

Gabin Lucas’s colleague was hoping for better operation of the automatic wipers. ” You really have to have rain all over the windshield for the wipers to turn on automatically. Concretely, I’ve always had to start them manually, and it’s not easy “, she believes.

Pressing the turn signal stalk fortunately allows you to have one, but only one, scan. This operation opens the screen on the digital tablet from which the operation of the windshield wipers is manually adjusted “, she illustrates.

Navigating on this central screen when stationary is fun. But while driving, I find it dangerous. This is only my opinion, which is however not that of many regular users of this car. “, she advances cautiously.

Heating and heated seats

Although today’s electric cars, and in particular all Tesla models, carry enough energy in their batteries to run the heating on board for several dozen hours, the fold is taken by the pioneers of the electromobility to control consumption on this subject.

How ? By moderating the temperature on board and using other heated equipment, such as the steering wheel and seats, for example. The latter, in the Model 3, did not convince Sabine Prévost. ” Only the central part of the seat really heats up, not the edges. Which gives a not really pleasant feeling on the edges of the buttocks. In addition, the system heats up either too much or not enough “, she confirms.

It’s a bit the same for the main heating which is not easy to adjust. Benefiting from the heated seats, I contented myself with a cabin temperature of 18° C. By positioning it at 21, I had the impression of having 24 degrees on board “, she continues, moderating: “ These assessments are here above all of the order of detail. They do not call into question all the qualities for which a motorist will choose to drive a Tesla Model 3 “.

Automation

During her visit, Sabine Prévost particularly appreciated the dynamism of the ” small sedan (compared to the American electric Model S).

The pick-up is of course excellent, and I very much appreciate the possibility of managing the car with the accelerator pedal alone, until stopping by lifting my foot, without touching the brakes. Its use is gentler than with many electric vehicles that have a similar system “, she compares.

I also like how the adaptive cruise control works on this car. On the other hand, I am less convinced by the lane keeping system which is deactivated each time you change lanes, with these beeps to warn of its inhibition “, she opposes.

I really feel that this scenario serves to encourage the purchase of the FSD (Full Self-Driving) option at 7,500 euros. Clearly, it’s the car that commands a lot of things. What may also please “, she feels.

Good visibility on the road

In the driver’s seat, one can only appreciate the excellent visibility on the road and its surroundings. On the other hand, it is less good towards the rear, in particular when using the interior mirror. “says Sabine Prévost.

One more detail: the gentle use of the turn signal stalk. It’s not much, but the fact that it automatically returns to horizontal, after giving the necessary impulse to activate the indicators, is very pleasant. It changes levers on which you have to exert significant pressure to stop them “, she wishes to underline.

16.8 kWh/100 km one way

What our interlocutor also and above all wanted to check during her trip of just over 300 kilometers is the consumption of the Tesla Model 3 Standard Plus in the winter conditions of Brittany.

I left Plérin with an 89% charged battery. This corresponds to a useful energy capacity of 44.5 kWh. The 76 km between Plérin and Carhaix were covered at 105 km/h on the expressway, and in compliance with the speed limits on the other portions. The average consumption then amounted to 16.8 kWh/100 km “, she reports.

During the lunch break in Daoulas, the battery recovered 16.275 kWh of energy in 1h29 of connection to a 22 kW AC terminal “, she specifies.

15.9 kWh/100 km one way

On the return trip, I traveled the 118 kilometers of 4-lane roads between Landerneau and Plérin at 115 km/h. The average consumption on this part was 16.2 kWh/100 km. If I also count the 18 km of secondary road between Daoulas and Landerneau, the value drops to 15.9 kWh/100 km », figure Sabine Prévost.

The journey she has made testifies to the good efficiency of the Tesla Model 3 Standard Plus. For comparison, Tesla communicates a combined cycle consumption for this model of 14.9 kWh / 100 km in summer and 20.6 kWh / 100 km in winter.

Avem and I would like to thank Sabine Prévost for her testimony on the use of the Tesla Model 3 Standard Plus.
