Arnaud Démare (Groupama – FDJ) wins the 5th stage of the Giro in the sprint

After the long ascent of Etna on Tuesday, the second stage in Sicily of the Giro 2022 offered a massive sprint on Wednesday. In Messina, the victory went to Arnaud Démare. Perfectly launched in the last 300 meters, the Frenchman of Groupama – FDJ offered himself the first victory of his season, his sixth on the roads of the Tour of Italy. On the line, the Frenchman beat Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) and took his revenge on this edition of the Giro after his second place in the first sprint on Sunday.

A relief for Démare after a lackluster start to the season

Two of Démare’s main rivals were dismissed well before the sprint on Wednesday: Mark Cavendish, winner of the 3rd stage, and Caleb Ewan could not keep pace with the peloton on the big climb of the day (Portella Mandrazi), 100 km of arrival. Although some ground was dropped uphill, Démare saw the lead again after the descent. Despite the work of the Quick Steps, the “Cav’” never saw the lead of the race again.

In the last kilometer, the Groupama – FDJ train seemed disorganized but Démare was launched perfectly by Ramon Sinkeldam. This is his first victory of 2022 after a lackluster start to the season. On the Giro, he now has six victories since 2019. In the general classification, Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) remains in pink. The only change in the top 10: Joao Almeida (UAE) scratched bonuses for 7th place.
