The long-awaited duel did indeed take place during the fourth stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné, a 32-kilometre time trial to be covered between Montbrison and La Bâtie d’Urfé (Loire). We expected a lot from the match between Filippo Ganna, double world champion in the specialty, and Wout van Aert, the current yellow jersey of the Criterium, rider of the Jumbo-Visma.
It was the Italian from Ineos Grenadiers who won with a little more than two seconds ahead of the Belgian, author of a yet breathtaking final, overtaking Victor Lafay (Cofidis), and finishing in the wheel of David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), happy not to have been overtaken on the line.
Also note the fifth place of Slovenian Primoz Roglic, van Aert’s teammate. He finished 42 seconds behind. In the general classification, the one who is the big favorite of the event occupies third place.
